The Best Football News of the Week

With the start of another football season just around the corner, many fans are already preparing themselves to get their football fix every Sunday through Thursday night. With so much football news available on all platforms, it can be tough to keep up with everything that’s going on around the league! Here are some of the top stories that happened over the past week in the world of football!

The Biggest Stories of the Week
In a show of solidarity, LeBron James and fellow NBA players Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and others wore shirts that read I Can’t Breathe to protest police brutality in light of Eric Garner’s death. The sportscaster is charged with murder for shooting unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Earlier in December, Mr. Brown’s stepfather called for calm after a grand jury did not indict officer Darren Wilson over his death. FIFA is due to vote on who will host the 2022 World Cup between Morocco and a joint bid from Argentina-Uruguay-Paraguay at 18:00GMT today (6 December). Although football is widely popular across Africa it has never hosted a World Cup tournament before.

The Biggest Stories From Around the League
The best part about football is how unpredictable it can be. The NFL, more than any other sport, truly is a game where anything can happen on any given Sunday (or Monday or Thursday night, for that matter). This makes it all but impossible to predict what’s going to happen—or at least, which team will win—before each season kicks off. However, with all that unpredictability comes moments where you just have to step back and take notice. Here are some of those moments from around the league so far in 2018

Early Look at Players Who Came Out on Top This Weekend
The NFL season isn’t fully underway yet, but there are already some fun trends emerging. For example, did you know that five different quarterbacks have thrown four touchdowns in a game over just the first two weeks? That includes Joe Flacco and Blake Bortles, two guys who were both considered to be pretty poor at their positions not long ago. Also, most people probably didn’t expect Case Keenum to be one of those players. More than likely he won’t be able to keep up his early success through an entire 16-game season, but it’s certainly impressive thus far. There may not be many big surprises like that to look forward to during 2017–well…except for maybe another Derek Carr injury.

Notable Performances from Sunday’s Games
This week’s top NFL news comes from Sunday’s games. Of course, there were a number of standout performances but some, including Drew Brees and Ezekiel Elliott, stood out more than others. Despite his team’s loss, Zeke accounted for 164 yards on 24 carries while punching in two touchdowns. In addition to Zeke’s efforts, Drew Brees led his squad to victory by passing for 252 yards with three scores (two passing and one rushing). Another notable performance comes from Derek Carr who threw five touchdown passes during Oakland’s impressive win over Baltimore.

Observations from Around the League
With training camps beginning next week, it’s time to take a look at what teams have been up to. The last week has provided one of my favorite football seasons – NFL Europe League. It’s an opportunity for fringe players and practice squad types to get game experience. With names like Alex Barron, Patrick Mannelly, Rashean Mathis, DeDe Dorsey, and on and on – there are always interesting football news stories coming out of NFL Europe every year. I will be paying close attention to all of these stories over the next couple of weeks as we move toward training camp…
